This collage was inspired by flooring and mosaic techniques, which have historically used found materials, gathered over time from shattered clay, glass, rock and other hard materials. Paper is very similar to these formations and here I've placed torn and cut paper for this surface. It is the setting for a man who, I imagine, is as strong and committed as can be.
Often when I make collage I seek inspiration from tilers, stonemasons and other building techniques, mimicking concrete and erosion, random arrangement and orderly placements.
This collage is full of details, which I find mesmerising. Up close, you'll see things that recall images embedded in your memory. Words, faces, places and a myriad of magazine shrapnel. From afar, the collage is an illusory shattered surface.
