This hand made paper collage is a three-dimensional study of hexagons. This wonderful shape, found in nature for its efficient potential, forms a powerful fabric. Bees form hives in hexagons for this reason. And as they face the pressures of climate change, this geometric logic continues to guide them.
Making this collage helps to understand the process of geometric formation, and the richness of the colour spectrum from yellow to black.
This collage is made entirely from recycled magazines and seeks to draw our attention to the possibilities of waste management. Every discarded magazine contains useful fragments. Looking at these collages opens up infinite associations, bites, characters and memories of our human existence as recorded in print media. In the future, these printed forms might seem archaic. Paper art feels like a fragile form, the colours of our world so precious.
Whenever I try to make a colour study, I find other colours essential. When I begin a collage I start with the harvest: here I chose yellows, blacks, and the shades of honey, cola, gold and turquoise. I map out the composition loosely and cut out my shapes with scissors. I don't use too rigid a stencil and avoid rulers whenever possible. I'm not a machine and in flaws lies the kind of perfection I seek. I glue my work using Mod Podge, brushes and my hands. This medium is instantly gratifying, drying into a glossy surface just like the stacks of magazines at the shop, with their irresistible allure. The mosaic tessellated surface crystallises over a few days of focused cutting and pasting. By the end, contrasts and highlights flicker across this dizzying surface.
This work is mounted on thin mdf board. It is varnished, and ready to hang immediately, or frame.
