I drew this around the time when my Ghost Tree series was beginning. At the time I thought to myself that trees might remember their surroundings and take these memories to the afterlife, including memories of man made structures. Later I learned that researchers had shown that plants really do have a form of memory, the extent and complexity of which remains unknown.
There is increasing scientific evidence for sentience and sociality in plants. A forest is a community of individuals interacting in complex ways. Trees react to changes in their surroundings, share resources and information with each other, and remember events.
My Ghost Tree series is based on careful observation of and meditation on trees and forests and attempts to portray these lifeforms in their essential or spiritual form. The creation of them has also been a meditative and contemplative focal point for my own spirit and I hope that others can derive some of the same talismanic or mandalic effects in beholding the images.
