Years ago a mate, who was a Botanist , asked me to grab a flowering Sturts Desert Pea from Tibooburra for the National Herbarium . I drove around looking couldn't find any.
I decided to drive back into town & have a beer at the pub and ask some locals. As I got to the outskirts of town I saw a lady standing on the side of the dirt road. I stopped and asked her if she knew where there were some Sturts Desert Pea plants. She said yes and would show me and hopped into my Hilux .She said her name was Alison. We went for a drive up the dirt road out of town , in the middle of know where . There were some big boulders and old trees. She said here and I stopped ute . We hopped out and walked about 10mtres . She pointed to one lonely plant with its characteristic red and black flowers. After we collected some of the plant we went for a longer walk to a billabong . She said " this is Depot Glen where explorer Sturt camped a long time ago in 1844 , my ancestors helped him survive during drought . "
Which is how I met Alison and this painting is about that day.
