Country Races
By Little Heath
September 2023
This is one of a series of paintings of Picnic Country Races. Many years ago I went to the Cobar Miners' Cup . Some Kangaroos were nibbling the dry grass and resting in the shade of gum trees around the track . I thought it was a bit strange that the course attendants hadn't moved them away. Though they did seem harmless enough.
Anyway, long story short , on the 5th race as the horses galloped around the track , running up the strait towards the finish line , one of the Kangaroos decided to hop on the track. Suddenly it took fright & to the delight of the audience got caught up in the race & won by a nose .
The two Bookies jokingly said the Kangaroo had rightfully won the race and wouldn't pay out for the horse !!! Everyone roared with laughter at the joke. And the bookies paid out on No.4 . The kangaroo was reported on the Tv news that evening.
This painting brings to life that delightful incident.
Please note the story behind this painting will be printed , signed & attached to the back of canvas .
