Artwork Description

Seen on local bush walks with its striking patterns and form. Goannas often are a strong role in Australian indigenous culture featuring for example in art, song and dreaming stories. I recall being read indigenous stories featuring goannas during primary school storytime.

Goanna in various Aboriginal languages is known as "wardapi" (Warlpiri), "thulii" (Gamilaraay), "gurudhaany" (Wiradjuri) and "ngamahl" (Bundjalung). However, the common name 'goanna'  to derive from the Spanish word 'iguana', where European settlers noted the reptile to be similar to South American lizards.
