Watercolour on paper

This artwork was created on archival cotton rag paper and painted with watercolour from observation during a six-hour sitting. Painting from life is a significant source of inspiration in my art practice.

For this specific artwork on paper, I utilised a palette consisting of reds, pinks, grey washes, and touches of yellow. My technique for painting with watercolour is a slow process that uses layering—I like to call it glazing—along with a combination of using different specialised watercolour brushes, called mop brushes and cat’s tongue brushes, in a loose gestural stroke with different watercolour hues and tints to emphasise the focal points in my subjects. While painting with watercolour, I worked from observation with a life model painting within a limited time frame to produce spontaneous washes and effects within the background.

Life drawing is the foundation of my art practice. It challenges my observation skills and develops my unique style. I am passionate about working with watercolours, which constantly surprise me with their exquisite beauty.

I painted this work entirely over one sitting. (6hours)
