This artwork was created on archival cotton rag paper using pink watercolour pencils and washes in shades of pink and red. It is a study from the artwork by Piero della Francesca, The Resurrection, dated about 1460.
As I navigated through the work, I painted my own interpretation, placing a unique emphasis on shape and texture. I used a blade to scrape the surface of the paper, a technique that reveals the paper fibres, and sea salt to lift the pigment, creating a distinctive effect. The figures have been painted with a blend of translucent and opaque pinks and reds, using a monochrome pink palette, a combination of watercolour pencils and washes of watercolour.
Through my personal sensitivity in arranging colour and form, this artwork transcends the underlying original meaning. It becomes a study of how I merge and blend shapes, each stroke communicating a new significance that encompasses the fluidity of watercolour and the concept of painting from opaque to translucent.
