I can't quite pinpoint the exact emotion or emotions I was putting into this painting. I guess it was part nostalgia, with the desire to escape to a place that doesn't exist. It's quite fitting, then, that this is part of my 'Escape' artwork series.
I was experimenting with texture and layers, as well as glazing over gold leaf. I provide several photos showing how the gold leaf appears in different lighting conditions. It is absolutely beautiful when the light hits the gold leaf, emphasising the surreal, dream-like feel of the painting. It comes alive.
To get the full shine and warmth of the gold leaf, it is best to display the painting in warm light but not in direct sunlight as it may begin to tarnish. Gold leaf is highly reflective and will reflect the colours in the room.
