It starts with choosing a colour plate from my old set of Chambers’s Encyclopaedia (1924 edition). I use the subject matter and colour scheme to develop the painting from there. In this instance, “Chinese Art” entry led me to paint a similar vase that belonged to my mother, with Willow pattern. I like to use the paper as a base for the drawing and painting process, because the contrast to the canvas surface adds an interesting texture. Almost a “picture within a picture”.
