Drawn to the charm of travel and the inherent stories behind maps, Sharon has used them as a base to explore human expression and our connection with nature. Her Map Series marks her first series as a professional artist. Having travelled the world a few times over she loves the nostalgic feeling evoked by old maps. โThey seem to speak of all the roads and the people who have travelled them. They kind of represent all of human life to me. All of the places we live and the things we do there, so it felt right to me to use them as a base for my paintings.โ
These finely detailed works generally comprise of 2-3 preliminary drawings then a redrawing of the final draft on to the map. Each piece can take 3-4 weeks to complete. Most maps used are from the UK circa 1960-1970s.
Note: The artwork is flattened on to 5mm adhesive foam core however the vintage map has inherent creases and imperfections โ these are part of the vintage feel. The art is sold mounted but unframed.
