Someone That I Used To Know depicts betrayal using a unique form of stylised Pop Art. When I painted this abstract painting I was heavily influenced by Aboriginal artworks and how Indigenous artists use motifs and symbols to represent certain things. Based broadly on those guidelines I drew the composition of this work with Gel Pen in a small artist drawing book. I have 5 drawing books dedicated to Gel Pen art and constantly draw inspiration from them. The woman with the snake head is a metaphor for betrayal, a liar, a woman with a poisonous tongue full of venom. The black and white shape with patterns at the bottom centre represents a whale - meaning to cross oceans. The tan-coloured pointy mounds behind the whale represent an island with large uniformed hills. Obviously, there is a narrative to this painting that is laden with symbolism to create hidden clues to the story!
