This painting was a breakthrough in a series of drawings sketched around Sydney's inner suburbs. I was interested in the patterns within the city's jumble of forms and textures. This seeming chaos appears to me as a kaleidescope which changes as the eye moves across almost any streetscape. I paint to search for hidden structure and love the textures and tones that appear along the way.
The painting became cohesive when I simplified the colour into a near-monochromatic alizarin crimson with black and white. I was able to abstract the drawn image to create an expressionistic view of this part of the city.
