This piece is all about light and warmth, and the delicacy of dappled light through the sapling forest. Light is allowed through the sienna wash underneath, and bounce back at the viewer creating a warm glow like morning sun. On top is an interesting palette I haven't used before, with interplay of the crimson with the orange tones, and the blue-greens of the cool undergrowth. In the end, I find it both delicate and striking.
I couldn't help but lean on my inspiration in Fred McCubbin to lend a hand. The turquoise-green is a McCubbin staple colour that sang beautifully when placed against the crimson and sienna providing deep and striking warmth alongside cool shades in a modern way.
This piece won Runner Up in the 2022 River of Art festival art prize, held at Narooma on the NSW south coast.
