This is Sintra. This experimental portrait is noble, bold, and full of beauty. Frustratingly, the painting is impossible to photograph well because of the strong contrast between the dark and light extremes of the palette, but the eye-catching poise and grace of the subject bring real impact when viewed in person.
With this painting, I wanted to test subverting classical portraiture with a contrasting abstraction - almost pushing back the portrait into the background, and in doing so, drawing greater attention to the emotion in the unabstracted parts of the face which fight back into the foreground.
