Gouache on paper
Signed on the front.
I would like to use this painting to highlight the power of colour & the power of language.
To have "a streak of lavender" was once socially unfavourable, eventuating into a scare that saw gay men dismissed from government services and lesbians excluded from the feminist movement.
However, the phrase was reclaimed and in the 70s many lgbtq+ and women's marches included lavender sashes and t-shirts worn with pride.
Lavender as a term is now sometimes used interchangeably with rainbow or lgbtq+ to describe an event or space, as purple remains an important queer colour.
