Well, obviously Sidney Nolan's Pretty Polly Mine is a big influence and of course Sidney Nolan in general, his style of painting, but also the way the characters in his paintings interact, the way the characters look at each other.
I think he was a big fan of Franz Kafka, that sense of being watched, under surveillance, of having to present to the authorities and then nothing gets achieved.
Also, James Ensor's, The Triumphant Entry of Christ Into Brussels. That feeling that people are wearing masks, putting on an appearance, a fake facades, which once again brings me back to Nolan.
