Why is a park on the Yarra trail called Loy’s Paddock you may well ask.
For those old enough to remember Loy’s Lemonade, in 70’s suburban Melbourne, you would place an order to Loy’s and then a crate of lemonade would be delivered to your house by the Loy’s truck.
In earlier days of the horse and cart, this park on the Yarra River was formerly the paddock where the horses for the Loy's delivery carts grazed.
The old Loy’s factory was just next door.
Nice middle class families didn’t buy Coke or Fanta at the supermarket, they ordered a delivery of a crate of Loy’s Lemonade.
It is the greatest pleasure, to be cycling Melbourne's trails and pull up at some some nondescript park and launch into some amazing history of the place and then realise that, thanks to the input from the audience that the anecdote is veering off into some hilarious shared absurdity of a 70s Melbourne child hood.
That is what piqued my interest in Loy’s lemonade bottle tops, cycling Melbourne’s Yarra Trail and pulling up at some non descript park called Loy’s Paddock, explaining the history of the park and discovering the hilarious shared anecdotes of Loy’s Lemonade from a 70’s Melbourne childhood.
