The Original “The Old Yorkshire Brewery” (Circa1938) boasts old architectural beauty and history to Collingwood Melbourne that inspired me to paint it.
During the heyday of the nineteenth century, Collingwood's manufacturing and brewing industries were thriving. Keen to quench the thirst for golden ale, John Wood and his architect son, James, selected a two-acre site in Robert Street.
In 1876, they began to lay the first foundation & stones of the Yorkshire Brewery, with its crowning glory a six-storey, polychrome brick brew tower that could be seen for many miles around.
The magnificent tower remained the tallest building in Melbourne for 12 years and is now heritage-listed
today.
This painting will be a talking point with its history and will compliment a room fitted out with Industrial style furniture and decor.
