I've always been interested in fairy tales and nursery rhymes and what they tell us about gender roles. In this painting I have used my niece as the model for the Sleeping Beauty. I wanted this painting to be decorative, whilst still current, which is why there are no ostentatious crowns or drapery, which are so often depicted in traditional fairy tale imagery.
The pattern of the dress is achieved through a screen printing process done in acrylic paint. The female figure has been painted in oil paint. It is professionally framed in Tasmanian oak.
