Between June and August each year, the Australian giant cuttlefish gather in great volumes in search for suitable mates. The dark backdrop could create a sense of mystery of these enigmatic lifeforms. Even though I gathered my own reference material, this painting in particular was composed with the help of photographs by Carl Charter. And thanks to Janine Baker for explaining the behaviour of the scene to me. It was amazing to experience the cuttlefish first-hand while snorkelling with EMS at Point Lowly in the Upper Spencer Gulf. The beauty of the underwater world where they meet in such large numbers is just breathtaking.
