My friend Murray is a talented potter (Murray Topham) and this is one of his beautiful vases. I picked some Pittosporum Undulatum (Native Daphne) from a tree across the road from Enmore park and popped it in this vase and produced 2 very different paintings around the same time.
This one is flat, graphic and pop art like, the other work (Murray's Vase part 1) also available on Bluethumb is quite different; rendered in oils and more like a classical still life painting. Here is the link to the other painting: https://bluethumb.com.au/sally-browne/Artwork/murray-s-vase-part-2
I have been experimenting with different mediums lately and these two paintings are excellent examples of how different types of paint and their unique characteristics can have such a huge impact on the outcome of a piece. For this work I have used Acrylic Gouache for it's matt, flatness and it naturally lends itself to a very graphic painting style. The addition of Neon orange paint on the berries, and neon green stripes on the stem of the plant give it a further contemporary, synthetic vibe.
