Magpie in Flight is my second ever bird study. Fascinated by the subtle hues magpies display amongst their feathers in various lighting situations and environments, I sought to uncover these subtleties through a small yet very detailed study.
Furthermore, being a colourblind artist, I decided to rise to the challenge of first trying to get a good photograph of a magpie, and then work from that photo whilst retaining a sense of freshness and vitality -- made possible I believe through the subtle addition of various hues amongst the shadow, midtone and light sections of the bird.
Shape design and interpretation of the feathers was another consideration, creating a design that was natural yet expressive and inventive in the decision of the overall aesthetic.
This piece was created with dulux weathershield house-paint, another challenging medium to use considering its exterior application; however, as I discovered, it is equally robust and up to standard for incorporating fine-art techniques like glazing, drybrushing, indirect layering and similar approaches.
This piece would suit a quite space for careful and calm reflection, somewhere like a bedroom or in a hallway where you can appreciate both it up close or from afar.
