The iconic Gymea as it was called by aboriginal people is an iconic flower which thrives on the sandstone belt of the NSW east coast from Newcastle to Sydney . The botanical name Doryanthes exelsa derives from the Greeek doratos spear, anthos flower and exelsa lofty. The compexity and magnificence of this australian flower inspires me as a painter. It is unique and imposing and historically and culturally significant. It was used as a food source by aboriginal people who ate the young stems and roasted the roots.
I wanted to capture this great specimen in a free bold and loose style and give some essence of its magnificent grandeur. My painting in inks and acrylic is a statement of grand power and a celebration of Nature's wonder
