The Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo gigas) is perhaps Australia's best known bird overseas. Its distinctive boisterous, laughing call has often graced the soundtracks of films set in South American or African jungles - such is its evocative, exotic nature. It has many regional names such as "Bushman's Clock" or "Laughing Jackass" most relate to its call or to the fact that it is a giant Kingfisher. Its song is often delivered by several birds simultaneously - usually family group. Gumtrees (eucalyptus) are its favourite habitat.
The two main species of Kookaburra are members of the Kingfisher family.
