Saturn is surrounded by 62 moons - one of the largest being Enceladus, a harsh terrain of ice enveloped by an unstable atmosphere. In this partly fanciful painting, the moon is alive with skating martian polar bears (who usually live in -201 degree temperatures) are suddenly faced with catastrophe. It takes mere seconds for their base to succumb to a relentless steaming lava flow, so they use every ounce of energy to propel themselves up onto the safety of Saturn’s icy rings.
Although the scene appears pure fantasy, an oxygen bubble was actually found on these very rings and scientists have confirmed Enceladus’ significant atmosphere were created from volcanism, geysers and gases. Using both impasto and fine brushwork, the artist hoped to "...create a scenario whereby highly reflective ice could be more glorious – space ‘almost’ witnessed by an Impressionist."
