FAMILIAR FACES
She hadn’t thought about the majority of people in that room for years, if at all.
It wasn’t that they weren’t worthy of her thoughts, it was purely based on the act of closing a chapter in her life.
Like keeping a book you’ve read on a shelf, knowing you’ll never read it again, but unable to bring yourself to throw it away because having it in view gives you a sense of accomplishment.
She wondered if they felt that way as she caught glimpses of polite smiles and eyes full of acknowledgment that tragedy had brought her back.
“It must be comforting to see so many familiar faces dear” her old neighbour said.
She wanted to say yes, not because she agreed, but merely to appease this ladies need for validation.
“It feels like a lifetime since I’ve seen them.” This worked for both of them, validation without the lie.
