Inspired by Sidney Nolan

Australian artist Sidney Nolan is the best recognised for his naïve, expressionist interpretations of the Australian landscape and local icons. His work is most notable for shining a spotlight on the infamous outlaw, Ned Kelly. . This iconic series transformed the Australian painting scene of the 20th century, launching both Nolan and Australian art at the time to international audiences. Nolan's paintings of Australia's historical and legendary figures are featured in The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Modern in London and The National Gallery of Australia. . It's no surprise that contemporary artists have been inspired by such a remarkable painter, which is celebrated in this curation.

About the Curator

Sarah Newton

Sarah Newton is an artist and curator based in Melbourne. Born in Perth, she completed a Bachelor of Arts from Edith Cowan University. In her undergraduate studies, Sarah focused on and developed her practice as a painter and printmaker. . In 2017 she moved to Victoria to complete her Masters' studies in Arts Management from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, she graduated with distinction in 2019. Sarah is an active member of the arts community in Melbourne, frequently visiting exhibitions and was a guest judge for Mission to Seafarers annual Art Prize in 2018.
