Prizeworthy Art

It's Archibald day! The finalists for this year's Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes will be announced by the Gallery of NSW. As we countdown to the announcement, we're casting our eyes to exceptional talent to be found here on Bluethumb. Not only do we have many proud past Archibald Finalists, but also a strong stable of Collectable Artists as well as many artists who've been winners and finalists in other major national prizes.

The painting is a portrait of a black male mid to late 20s. The face is facing toward the viewer. The eyes are looking past the viewer with limited facial expression. It feels like the subject is lost in thought. The painting focuses on the detail of the eyes with thick oil paint applied via a palette knife. As the viewer moves past the eyes, the detail of the face begins to disappear into the background. The painting, at first glance, looks to be black and white but on closer inspection, there is a full range of colours perfectly placed.

The stairway leading to the beach on a brilliant sunny day with swimmers and sun bathers at the pool. This particular stairway was demolished in 1996 due to neglect and corrosion. I happened to have taken some photos just before it's demise. It was covered in floral plants.
