Red-Tailed Black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus banksii) are a species I study frequently. They roost in our trees outside my studio and I have lots of opportunities to view such spectatcular birds. My painting is of a female as she delicately opened a gum-nut to feed on the seed. Within the painting of the Cockatoo I concentrated on her wonderful stripe feathers and yellow specks which run through her feathers around her bill. I just loved how she grasped the gum-nut with such ease as she perched on the delicate branches. The foliage adds contrast to the black, orange and yellow colouring, framing such a stunning bird.
