The Shark Bay region of Western Australia is home to one of the largest populations of dugongs anywhere in the world. In fact over 10,000 dugongs reside within the Shark Bay World Heritage region, about 10% of the global population (ref: Parks & Wildlife Service | sharkbay.org). Each time I edit raw images of the inner gulfs of Shark Bay, I am reminded of these magnificent creatures, their forms appearing as small dark specks as they contrast against the vast expanse of varying blues in the crystal-clear waters of the area.
After a long gestation period, dugong mothers allow their young to suckle for about 18 months and remain with their young for extended lengths of time, only calving every 2.5 to 7 years. (ref; australian.museum). I felt that this image was a fitting tribute to these caring creatures.
