Sometimes planned exploration leads to unexpected treasures. ‘New Hope I’ was a chance find while exploring the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Airlie Beach in Queensland from the open door of a Cessna 182.
After exploring the familiar patterns and shapes of the shifting tide at Hill Inlet, the pilot and I headed for Hardy Reef, popularised by the unique Heart Shaped Reef. It was whale season in the area and the horizon was alive with puffs of seaspray as the migratory humpbacks made their journey south to feed in the Antarctic waters during the summer months. Circling pods of predominantly male humpbacks, we stumbled across a concentration of coral spawn pushed together by wind and tide. The Great Barrier Reef is known to most commonly spawn around November each year. This was certainly an out-of-season event and not expected at the time we were flying. With two camera bodies in play, we circled the mass of planulae with the nebula-like formations swirling far below us. It is moments like these that are most-rewarding with aerial photography, seeking one thing and finding something completely unexpected.
